December 2010

We would like to wish you a very happy, healthy and successful 2011.

Before we knew it, Christmas was upon us and it was lovely to spend  time with family and friends.

A much loved Xmas present!

Partying at Christmas is very tiring!

Once the snow melted, Razz returned to her owner and Hussar gained another companion.  Sox is a weanling gelding by the coloured TB stallion I Was Framed out of the mare Elite de Roulette who was second in the large section of the Cuddys at HOYS in 2010.  He is black and a smart boy who will do well in the show ring.

Snow, snow and more snow – what more can we say???

We were very lucky in Somerset, as although we had plenty we were certainly much better off than some of our friends in the North.  The horses and the dogs seem to love it but it does make doing horses hard work, with everything frozen.

Snow late December!

Snow early December!

Little did we know then that it would get worse, a lot worse!

Conan ventured out when the snow was nearly gone!

We weaned Hussar gradually and he was joined by a filly called Razz (Ragazzo – Glucksfall) who came to stay after she too went through the ‘gradual process’.  They are two well adjusted weanlings and are great friends.

Talking of Oz, Caroline sent us some fantastic photos of Sandhurst and Quantador, who were 3 weeks under saddle, with Sara in the plate.  Both the boys look absolutely fabulous and it is wonderful to see them going so well already.

Emma and Chris from Australia came to stay again before they went back to Oz.  Emma’s mother Caroline owns Sandhurst so it was like having “one of the family” to stay.

I think they enjoyed their time with us, and we took them racing at our local track Wincanton where they enjoyed the thrills and spills of National Hunt racing.

Both horse and jockey were fine after their fall!

Before the winter set in good and proper, we had a “romantic” weekend at Babbacombe in Devon and stayed in a beautiful hotel right on the sea.  It was so nice to have a lay in, cooked breakfast and delicious dinners without a horse in sight!

Our hotel behind right by the sea!

We have had some lovely photographs from Australia from Caroline and Sara of Sandhurst and his travelling companion Quantador.

Both the boys are rising 3 and they will be presented for licensing next year.

It is fabulous to be able to watch their progress, albeit from afar and we are delighted with how Sandhurst is growing on - exciting times ahead.

At the end of the show season, we enjoyed a few days at HOYS supporting our friends, which was a great social occasion. Our return, we spent a couple of days with Ann and Tony in Padstow which included our annual visit to Rick Stein’s wonderful seafood restaurant.

We are sadly gearing up for winter and so are the horses as they are getting a little hairy!

After lots of soul searching, we have decided to retain Hussar for the time being - he is such a nice colt that we have bent our rules about not keeping the boys - well, for now anyway!

A selection of photos taken over the last month of  "home life".

Our homebred "Buranpour" is going really well under saddle for his owner.  He is by the late Negretto who was ridden by Carl Hester.

Florianne's full sister Diva Bella's 2010 filly "Sunny Girl" by Sancisco sold for €7,000 to Russia at the 123. Elite-Auktion Hannoveraner Reitpferde und Fohlen.

We finished the show season with Fairfax on a high.  We took her to the BSHA at Addington and she won the "all ages" in-hand Coloured class.  In the championship, she was against the riddens and she went Champion!

Fairfax has had an awesome season having won 10 Sport Horse and Coloured classes, 8 times Champion and twice Reserve Champion - it will be a hard act to follow next year!

Florida's son Sir Cisco (Sancisco) qualified for the 4 year old Championate in jumping and Stall-K's 4 year old Dressage Cup with a qualifying score of 80%.  In the final for jumping, he came 7th out of 19 horses.

Sir Cisco He has been a widely used sire in Norway this year with 28 mares, so it will be nice to see his foals next season.

August 2010

We are delighted that following Hussar's Oldenburg inspection, he was awarded the coveted Premium "Fohlenpramie" status.  Only the very best 15% of foals are awarded a premium so we were delighted. Dr Karsten Kuehl very much liked the colt and we are very pleased that Florianne has yet again produced a Premium foal - her third running.

Fairfax had a good day at Bucks County where she was Champion Coloured and Reserve Champion Sport Horse and once again went well in the Cuddys.  She had a nice write up in Horse & Hound on 2 September.

A few snaps of Fair Oaks "relaxing" in the field!

Hussar is so photogenic, I can't help but get the camera out!

July 2010

We received some more photos of Fairfax as Champion Sport Horse and Coloured at Kent County. She also had a nice write up and photo in Horse & Hound on 29 July.

Some more photos of Sandhurst at his first show in Oz!

News from Australia!  Sandhurst attended his first "party" at the SPPHAWA Youngstock Show on 31 July.  He was Champion Warmblood colt followed by Supreme Warmblood of the show.  He then contested the best 2 yos of the "Show" class -  which he was runner up against about 20 other horses.  To finish the day, Sandhurst was pulled forward in the top 5 for Supreme of Supremes.  He is keeping up the good work in the Southern Hemisphere!

More photos to follow!

Hussar is divine - I adore this colt.

Sandfontein with his owner Sam went to his first "party" to the BEF at Keysoe.  He was impeccably behaved and gained a First Premium with a score of 8.36.

A first visit to Kent County proved to be  a lucrative one! Fairfax won the Coloured Youngstock class and then took the Coloured Championship.

Later that day, she went on to win the 2yo Sport Horse class and was then Champion Sport Horse.  Furthermore she was the Supreme Sport Horse Champion overall.

Once again, she qualified for the Cuddy’s the next day and was pulled forward in the final six line-up.

Sir Cisco has qualified for the four-year old Championships in dressage and jumping in August in Norway.

We have had good news with both the mares having a positive heartbeat scan.

Florianne's breeder, Inke, has sent us good news from Germany!  Divabella, full sister to Florianne has had a fabulous filly by Sancisco.

Hussar is a lovely boy in all respects.

Fair Oaks is growing up into a nice young horse.

It has been a terribly sad time for us as we lost our lovely Firefox on 16 June 2010.  Our dear “Ruby” died in the field having suffered heart failure.  Cardiologist Mark Patteson diagnosed a unique heart defect which has never been recorded worldwide.  She was growing beautifully and gave no outward signs of having a problem and was the nicest, sweetest foal and a complete delight to own.  She has not died in vain as her heart has been preserved and a veterinary paper will be written on her condition, so she will have left her mark on this world and hopefully further veterinary knowledge to the benefit of every foal.

We had a lovely couple of days at Royal Ascot – enjoying the hospitality in the Royal Enclosure!  It was great to dress up and catch up with friends and family too.

Both mares have been scanned in foal at 14 days.

Having never been to Royal Cornwall show, we decided to enter.  They did not have a Sport Horse class so Fairfax went along for the Coloureds.  She won the 2/3yos and then took the Championship.

Once again, she qualified for the Cuddy’s and was pulled forward in the final nine line up.

May 2010

Third and final day at Bath & West for us with Fairfax in the Cuddy’s under Henrietta Knight.  Out of 20 forward she was Second Reserve so we were highly delighted.

We were back again the next day at Bath & West for the Coloured class.  Fairfax won the 2yo section and like in 2009 she was Champion Coloured.

Bath & West is our local and favourite show.  Fairfax won her 2yo Sport Horse class on the first day and then took the Sport Horse Championship.

Fairfax kicked off the show season at Devon County Show.  She won her 2yo Coloured class and then went onto to be Champion Coloured and also qualified for the Cuddy’s.

News from Germany.  Florance, mother of Florianne has had a lovely colt by the grey Holstein stallion H-Ekwador (Heraldik xx - Corofino I - Landgraf I).

April 2010

Florianne, not to be out-done by Florida, produced a beautiful black colt at 6am on 30 April by Hochstern. Again, he too is the spit of his sire. He has been called Hussar C.

Florida gave us a fabulous chestnut filly at 8pm on 28 April by Bon Balou.  We are absolutely delighted with her and she is the spitting image of her sire!  We have named her Firefox C.

* * *

AmaZulu C is out and about competing.  At her latest competition at Hickstead she had  two 3rds in two Novice tests with 64.29% in novice 37 and 63.85% in novice 35.

* * *

Lillian Strand sent some photos of Florida's son Sir Cisco in Norway.  He has started jumping under saddle and is going very well.

Sir Cisco also had his first foal on 29 April;  a coloured filly out of an Arabian mare.

With Cheryl Mitchell from Flax Lion Stud, we travelled to Germany in search of potential sires for my mares and for Cheryl to see her “boys” at Gestut WM.

We visited Zucht Hof Klatte where the fabulous Argentinus used to stand until his death in 2007.  There we saw the chestnut Chamberland (Chambertin – Landadel – Fruhlingstraum II) who scored 9.06 in jumping at his 30-day test who I had travelled to see and he was a lovely stallion.  We were also introduced to Cornet’s Prinz (Cornet Obolensky – Almox Prints J – Polydor) and were extremely taken with this beautiful show jumper.

We went onto the 122 Elite-Auction at Verden where we were interested in looking at the foals on offer, as well as potentially buying lot No: 107 Radiant (Royal Classic – De Niro – Cardinal xx) for a friend.  Sadly, Radiant went above our budget and he was sold locally.  The Royal Classic foals all had beautiful heads (like their sire), fabulous movement and were certainly peas in a pod.

Gestüt WM had their annual stallion show.  Cheryl’s fabulous Don Ricoss (Don Frederico – Weltmeyer – Eiger I) never disappoints me, nor do the foals he produces.

It was great to see Benetton Dream (Brentano II – Rotspon – Davignon I), Souvenir (Santorini – Argentan – Novize) and the lovely show jumping stallion Adlantico As (Adlantus AS – Grannus – Waldschutz).  As always it was lovely to see Samaii (Sambertino – Brentano II – Wenzel II) as having had him staying with me to show for Cheryl as a yearling, I am certainly emotionally attached to him and it is always so pleasing to see how he is progressing in his dressage career with Ecki.

I wanted to see Royal Classic (Royal Highness – Florestan I – Landadel) having seen him last year as a 3 year old.

He didn’t disappoint me and he was fabulous under saddle - I am well and truly smitten!  He has definitely been booked for my State Premium mare Florianne (De Niro – Lavado – Caribo GL) and I am very excited at the prospect.

Last, but not least was the young stallion St Moritz Junior (St Moritz - Wie Weltmeyer - Prince Thatch xx) who was awarded Pramienhengst at the Hanoverian Licensing in 2009.

He had not been under saddle for long but he was beautifully presented and for a green horse, he was very sensible and impressive.  He has been added to my list of stallions for the future!

March 2010

Lilian has sent the lastest picture taken in 2010 of Sir Cisco (Florida's 2006 foal).

Friends have been searching for a  pony and we decided that Joey would do the job as he is completely wasted with us being a companion.

What a start to the New Year with the Big Freeze!  SNOW, SNOW and more SNOW!

Knowing that we were not alone struggling with livestock in the freeze was only marginly comforting!

The horses enjoyed the snow at first but even they were obviously getting fed up with the weather.  Conan rarely ventured out and although Bourbon thought it was great to start with - his first snow - even he decided that it was better to stay indoors after a few days!

A selection of photos of life at Sycamore Farm in the snow!
