A ring full of buyers looks, from the outside, like a page of numbers being read out. From the inside it is thirty seconds of judgement being passed on a young horse, and most of that judgement happens before it even walks in.
Two years, sometimes three, between a foal finding its legs and a horse walking into a racecourse paddock for the first time. Almost none of that time is spent doing anything that looks like racing.
